Our Journey

The journey of Pure Makai began during an unexpected time—April 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the world slowed down and curfews kept us close to home, it became a time that brought our 'Ohana (family) even closer. With extra time on our hands, we started dreaming up ways we could build something meaningful—something that reflected who we are and echoed our lifestyle.

The ocean has always been a source of inspiration for us, so creating an ocean-themed brand felt perfect. We spent months dreaming up names—some serious, some hilarious. Among the many ideas: Makai Slayahs/Killahz, ‘Opihi Man, Portuguese Man-o-war, and ‘Ōhiki (sand crab). After three months of back-and-forth, we landed on the perfect name: Pure Makai—a name that felt true to our roots and vision.

Creating our logo was the next step in the journey. It took another two months to develop a design that captured the spirit of our brand. On the left, you'll see our original logo—a symbol of where we started. On the right, our current logo reflects how far we’ve come.

Our love is all about spreading the Makai vibes, whether it's basking in the sun like a Hawaiian monk seal by the shore or conquering the sea for 'ahi.
